The Dearth of Serious Women-Friendly Games

Now that I’ve been on a gaming kick, I’m having some difficulty finding games that really work for me. Apparently I am the gaming world’s newest and largest demographic — female, over 40, and a semi-casual gamer — but nobody seems to be catering to this demo yet. I have found several women-gamer websites, but I was dismayed to find that the vast majority of them are loaded with nothing but advertising and popups (or worse) instead of actual content. Here are the few good ones I’ve found:

It’s not that I’m averse to guy games. Sure, I love fairies and catkin, and I’ve spent more time on Bejeweled, Guitar Hero, and DDR than I like to admit. But I don’t want to play Barbie games! I rather enjoy blowing stuff up and killing things in game; I can happily slay dragons (and evil tomatoes) all day long in Final Fantasy XII. I want amazing graphics, but not wall-to-wall blood and realistic gore. I want to be able to select a female character to play, and I want her to be a real, complex heroine, not a princess to be rescued or a bimbo handing out trophies. I don’t mind if my avatar is sexy and skimpily-dressed, but she needs to have a freakin’ backbone. FPS games make me nauseous, and car chase games bore the hell out of me. If I’m playing a MMORG, I want the option to play solo for a while until I get used to the game, and a way to bail out of being stalked by other players with a bad attitude. Is that too much to ask?
